


My original plan was to have the students tell me how to fill in the blanks for the rules under the goal for the day, but the timing overall did not allow a chance to do so.įor this lesson, I enjoyed using GSP because I felt it deepened the students’ learning of the three rules for balancing inequalities. I think this would have helped aid to students’ visual representation of the rules in mathematical notation. I believe that I needed extra time to be able to explicitly go over the rules and write them formally on the board, or even have them written on a PowerPoint slide already. I was able to cover the material that I planned to in the period, but going over the rules was faster than I think it should have been. I struggled with how much in-depth I should be expecting their responses since it was not my own classroom that I am used to teaching. Overall, I think that the implementation of this lesson went well and I am happy the way I structured this lesson. One thing that was slightly difficult was the fact that I was teaching my peers and not high school students seeing this material for the first time. This lesson plan was fun because I was able to lead the classroom on my own, and I knew the particular plan I had setup for the period. I really enjoyed being able to teach this lesson to my peers because it gave me the opportunity to learn more about time management, what is reasonable to expect to cover in one class period, and more time interacting with students. For this particular topic, I would use this activity again because I believe that it goes past the typical lecture class and allows the students a hands on approach to learning to solve inequalities with visually specific examples.

Also, the students work in pairs throughout the GSP activity, so they are able to foster rich mathematical discussions with their partners. This lesson plan is designed for the students to look at each of the 3 general rules in specific examples, and then the worksheet prompts the students to then generalize these rules as seen. Furthermore, this GSP activity is mathematically meaningful because it goes just past the teacher telling the rules for solving inequalities by balancing. Luckily, this activity does not require any special skills to complete, which ensures that all students should be able to use it. This activity is great for the students to first explore the rules that can be seen throughout this activity for solving inequalities because the changes are immediate,visual, and are mathematically and cognitively faithful. This activity is very interactive and allows students to change the variables and numbers in each pan in order to balance the inequality.
